Four Tips to Prevent Online Fraud

Scammers are everywhere and as life is becoming more and more digital, it’s important to know how scammers might be trying to target you! Always be cautious of what you click on, never give personal or account information to anyone who has reached out to you, and always verify who you are talking to by hanging up and calling the company directly using a well-publicized phone number.

Con artists cheat Americans out of billions of dollars every year. Recognizing red flags for potential scams can help protect you and your hard earned cash.

Four Tips to Prevent Online Fraud

1. Know Who’s Asking

Banks won’t send you emails or text messages asking for personal information such as birthday, mother’s maiden name, account and/or social security numbers. We already have that info!

2. Keep Your Passwords Secret

Don’t share passwords. For better protection, change your passswords regularly and use a combination of at least one capital letter, numbers, and special characters, that equal at a minimum 8 characters.

3. Beware of Phishing and Spoofing

Communication disguised and designed to trick you into giving up information.

You receive an email that appears to be legit, asking you to update/verify your personal information by replying to the email or visiting a website. You click the link and are sent to a spoofed website that looks nearly identical to the real thing—like your bank or credit card site—and asked to enter sensitive information like passwords, credit card numbers, banking PINs, etc.

4. Social Media Privacy Matters

Sharing personal information online is a huge risk - even if you know all your followers. Birthdays, pet names, locations, and email addresses are easy ways to decipher passwords from seemingly harmless personal facts.
